I am so grateful for technology. Even though I could not be present for the conversation, I can still partake in the rich ideas discussed via the video recording.
Although life circumstances have dictated that I will defer my studies for a term, seeing my colleagues online was inspiring and motivating. Thank you for your willingness to put forth your ideas - honest and curious. It helped bring courage for my own investigation as I keep my toe in the door of academia during this shift in my life.
The discussion has brought forth great ideas, more to consider, and an opportunity for reflection. Brainstorming whom I can potentially talk to in my interview process, what research I may look into as I dive into dreaming about how art influences life, and more specifically, how dance influences and shapes our choices in life, keeps my own curiosity and creativity alive.
Even the vocabulary - shapes - speaks to how a dancer might explore with their physical form as they create art or guide and hone artistic choices based on the sensation of the form and the aesthetic of the shape they make or the sequence of vocabulary they are learning to create choreographic phrases. We become more aware of feedback, heightening awareness, guiding our choices in and outside of the studio. Choices that can shape our path in life.
Pathways carved out by vulnerability, courage, and the nakedness of dance that give way to and breed gritty risk-takers in touch with deeper parts of themselves. Individuals that cultivate their vulnerability and bravery, learned through their dance training as tools to apply to life. The awareness of their physicality influences and provides methods for easing tension, providing connection, and a heightened awareness pedestrians (those who only view their physical body as a way to carry their head from place to place) do not generally tap into. Dancers are fortunate to cultivate methodologies that translate into lifelong learning. A guidebook for the resources necessary for life: breath, grit, commitment, determination, connection, self-awareness, self-care, and so much more. The assets in dance are immeasurable - yet I am going to attempt to quantify the quality of the influences of dance.
I love this process of exploration and discovery. I see these gritty, determined, curious, brave risk-takers here in this course. Evidence in my mind that art provides skills that encourages growth, awareness, and a lifelong toolbox of resources to draw from.
Thank you for the inspiration.
Hi Sheahan,
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post! Your comment about dancers' fortune in being able to create their own method and methodology in life and practice has struck a chord with me. I believe that this is a worthwhile and valuable way to see and approach this course and the opportunities it provides to channel our own private, personal study.
Pathways and Shapes.. I think I have found some clarity in my ideas since my musings in the recording (I think) you watched. I am thinking more clearly about the use of imagery in feedback; vocabulary, colour, adjective, onomatopoeia, journey.. How do teachers access this and how do learners engage with it?
I hope you are well and navigating your life's changes with colour and calmness.
